Our Essen preview list is growing and already includes 47 games. More will follow in the next few days and in the weeks after the show, but this year it is quite hard to get useful details about the new releases before the show.
But here are the games I’ve added in the last few days:
Today was the Award Ceremony for the Spiel des Jahres 2016.
The winner of the Spiel des Jahres (the more family friendly award) is Codenames from CGE:
In Codenames, two teams compete to see who can make contact with all of their agents first. Spymasters give one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the board. Their teammates try to guess words of the right color while avoiding those that belong to the opposing team. And everyone wants to avoid the assassin.
The winner of the Kennerspiel des Jahres (the award for the more complex gamers games) is surprisingly Isle of Skye from Lookout Games:
In the tile-laying game Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King, 2-5 players are chieftains of famous clans and want to build their little kingdoms to score as many points as possible — but in each game only four of the sixteen scoring cards will be scored.
The first delivery included Viticulture Essential Edition and Between Two Cities. I can especially recommend Between Two Cities: A light-weight tile drafting and city building game. It’s great for larger group because it plays up to seven. If you haven’t heard anything about it, watch GameNight play the game.
