Capital was a surprise in April and despite an ugly graphic design the gameplay was a big success with our customers and we received a lot of great feedback. Yamatai is a success like all the big box releases from Days of Wonder, but this one is especially interesting for fans of Five Tribes. Clank! Sunken Treasures is the first expansion for Clank and after the success of the base game a Top 5 spot for the expansion was to be expected. Rounding up the Top 5 is Barenpark, the newest game of Cacao designer Phil Walker-Harding.
The two player version of Caverna took the top spot in the pre-order Top 5 easily. Charterstone and Terraforming Mars: Hellas & Elysium kept their Top 5 spots from last month and are still going strong. After the disappointment with the cancelled retail release of Gloomhaven 1st edition a lot of customers jumped on the chance to secure a copy of the reprint. And the Anniversary edition of In the Year of the Dragon is a game quite a few of our customers have been waiting for.
I am really glad I have given Frogriders a chance, it’s another great game from the designer of Flamme Rouge, Asger Harding Granerud. A really fun tactical family game with a nice theme to fit the mechanics and it has given me some real gaming highlights, definitely a stayer in my collection.
Ultimately, it’s lightness may be its undoing for some gamers, but for me it is a delightful option for those times when you need something short, but fulfilling at the start or end of a game night. For less than £10 you really can’t go wrong.
This is a game which will sit happily alongside Five Tribes for me. It feels linked in some way, playing totally differently yet giving the same kind of vibe. If you were not a fan of Five Tribes you may not dig Yamatai either, for those same reasons mentioned above, but if you’re a fan of Five Tribes then you will almost certainly enjoy Yamatai, for different yet similar reasons.
Days of Wonder has announced Yamatai, a new game designed by Marc Paquien and Bruno Cathala:
In Yamataï, players compete to earn prestige points using different strategies. Clear the different islands of the archipelago to recruit powerful specialists that will assist you, or use the resources carried by the boats that navigate between them to construct buildings on the islands! And, if you’re skilled enough, try creating prestigious buildings such as high temples or rare torii.
The game will get released at the end of March in Europe and is now available to pre-order.
