This will be my goto ‘gateway’ game to introduce people to the hobby from now on. Taking the theme and look of the regular 7 Wonders, Architects distills the game to a point where really it is a different beast. Each player will choose a nation and get given all the components in a tray. This includes a unique deck with a holder, and cardboard tokens that make up their wonder. The wonder tokens are built first down initially, but can be turned over during game play by spending resources.

In a big difference to 7 Wonders cards are discarded when used – they don’t give you permanent access to that resource. Similarly science cards are discarded to gain progress tokens. Military cards with horns depicted will be discarded after a battle but without horns are kept.

Each wonder has a unique power that can be activated on some of the building steps. These are quite simple for the most part, but work well with in the system, offering you more flexibility.

On setup you will place your deck of cards between you and the player to the left. On you turn you can choose to take a card from that deck, the one on your right or the one in the middle. The card will go into your tableau and activate any appropriate effects. It’s supremely simple but it does feel like there are multiple paths to victory.

This is a very light game but the production and ease of play make it an easy recommendation and a game that will see a lot of play.
