Description

The Calico board game is a puzzly tile-laying game of quilts and cats.

In Calico, players compete to sew the coziest quilt as they collect and place patches of different colors and patterns. Each quilt has a particular pattern that must be followed, and players are also trying to create color and pattern combinations that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also able to attract the cuddliest cats!

Turns are simple. Select a single patch tile from your hand and sew it into your quilt, then draw another patch into your hand from the three available. If you are able to create a color group, you may sew a button onto your quilt. If you are able to create a pattern combination that is attractive to any of the cats, it will come over and curl up on your quilt! At the end of the game, you score points for buttons, cats, and how well you were able to complete your unique quilt pattern.

You can read the rulebook on the official website.

Calico is a really excellent puzzle game that has you second guessing yourself as well as your opponents throughout. Each player has a board in which they place hexagonal tiles which can be of 6 different colours as well as 6 different patterns there are also 3 goal tiles which are placed on your board each of which dictate the patterns to surround them in order to score. Other scoring comes from sets of specific tile patterns (6 cat goals) you also score for making sets of 3 of the same colour. The rules are so simple, play one of 2 tiles from your hand into your display then replace with one of 3 tiles on display however it is the large variety of point scoring opportunities that makes this such an interesting game requiring you to plan your display to maximise your score from very early in the game. In a way the starting score tiles are hurdles to scoring the cat patterns but without scoring them you will not do well, a catch 22 position you will find yourself in from start to finish.
