Description

In the HOLI Festival of Colors board game, players gather to celebrate the end of winter as they spread colorful powder on each other, dancing and celebrating new beginnings.

Every spring, celebrants gather to spread color and cheer during one of India’s most vibrant festivals. Move around the festival grounds throwing colored “gulaal” powder onto your friends and the crowd. Aim higher and let your color fall from above on as many people as you can. For Holi is a time for playful mischief and a little friendly rivalry is just what the festival calls for…

In Holi [hoh-lee], players gain joy by throwing color on the boards (higher levels are worth more points), getting color on others, and from collecting sweets. Play your color cards cleverly, climb up at the right time, and spread the most joy!

Mechanisms & Features:

  • Area Control – Colored powder tokens spread across the board and onto other players, covering the board in the pattern selected
  • 3-Tier Board – Players ascend to have their powder fall from above, giving up victory points for better control
  • Puzzle-like Action Selection – Color cards determine the pattern colored powder will fly in, giving players room to select the pattern that works best for them.
  • Variable Scoring Condition – Each game can have slightly different scoring conditions, adding depth and replayability

The game celebrates the Hindu festival of “Holi” where players gain points for spreading their own colour paint on opponents playing pieces and placing their paint on higher levels, the playing area is a square board but on three tiers. On a turn you play a card from your hand of three which dictates where you place your colour paint splashes, you may rotate the card, you may also move your playing piece before or after you activate the card, the interesting twist is that you can move to any space on your level provided there is no playing piece on it and provided certain criteria are met you may rise to a higher level. This is an interesting game that works well over the different levels, due to C-19 I have only played it 2-player where it feels a little abstract, I cannot wait for restrictions to lift so that I can play multi-player where I believe its greater strength lies with paint flying all over the place and creating interesting choices.
