Description

Imperial Steam (designed by Alexander Huemer) is a highly strategic yet accessible economic and logistics game that sees you making difficult decisions as you manage your business’s operations while navigating fierce competition to ensure your victory!

The Industrial Age is starting to boom. You are in need of more workers for your factories, and you also need more workers to build railroad tracks to expand your railway network. This, in turn, will enable you to deliver the goods from your factories to cities with high demand — but be sure to earmark goods for fulfilling profitable public contracts because when the connection to Trieste is made, your net worth is all that matters.

This game is wonderful; rich, deep, varied, and very unforgiving!

The game involves building rail lines from Wien to Trieste, in Austria. On the way, you can build factories, hire workers, buy resources from the market, buy or upgrade new trains, philanthropise, take and fulfil contracts, and a whole host of other actions, to help build up your cash to win.

One very clever feature is the ability to get investors, which give you an instant cash infusion, but who will demand 10% of your final score as payment. Invest too little, and you may not have enough cash to build all the tracks and factories you need, but invest too much, and you may lose more than you invested!

Fulfilling contracts is one of the main ways to score big, but if noone connects a train line to Trieste, contracts are worthless! But if someone does connect to Trieste, you MUST fulfil the contracts, or lose their value instead of gaining it! And if you are not connected to Trieste, you will have to pay your opponents to use THEIR train lines to reach Triests to fulfil the contracts, giving them even more money.

A brilliantly balanced and cleverly nuanced game. Not for the feint-hearted though, as it can be unforgivingly punishing if you miscalculate your strategy, and you could be left behind in the dust (of the train).
