Description

Merv The Heart of the Silk Road is a tense economic game charting the rise and fall of the greatest city in the world.

In Merv, players are vying to amass power and wealth in the prosperous heart of the Silk Road. Through careful court intrigue, timely donations to the grand mosque, and favorable trade deals, players attempt to redirect as much of that prosperity as possible into their own pockets.

Meanwhile, beyond the city walls, Mongol hordes approach. If you help construct the city walls, you give up on precious opportunities to build up your own stature, but leave it unprotected and you will burn with the city. Every decision is weighty and the consequences of each misstep are dire. Will you rise to prominence or fade into oblivion?

This is a very engaging game, the theme fits well, the various mechanisms work together excellently and the different scoring areas are well balanced with none being more advantageous than any other making emphasising that this game is about skill of play. This game lasts 12 turns split over 3 periods the raiders hit before scoring at the ends of periods 2 & 3. The main playing area is a grid of 25 tiles placed in a square and on their turn a player selects a tile (from a column on even turns and a row on odd turns), they then collect resources from any one player’s buildings (generally their own) then do the action associated with the chosen tile, the action allows them to spend the resources to advance on a mosque track, collect trade goods, collect camel trains, build walls to defend the city or place people in the Palace; all these actions lead to scoring either victory points, influence or favour points. This game has a lot going on and I have just scratched the surface here, it is mainly a resource management game but there are other mechanics for instance control over turn order or the interrelationship of the influence track on trade and caravans. This is an brilliant mid-heavy weight game.
