Description

It’s race day in Quedlinburg, and with the right combination of food and luck, you will ride your mount to victory and claim the golden cauldron.

Mit Quacks & Co. nach Quedlinburg (designed by Wolfgang Warsch) features similar gameplay to The Quacks of Quedlinburg, with each player building their own bag of tokens over the course of play, then drawing those tokens to try to further themselves to victory.

Each player starts the game with their mount at the start of the racetrack and a bag that contains four dream tokens, a yellow 1 token, two red 1 tokens, and a red 2 token. On a turn, you draw a token from your bag, then place it on your animal board. If you draw a colored token, place the token on your animal board, advance your animal on the track as many spaces as the number on the token, then carry out the effect of that color: red tokens earn you 1-3 rubies, yellow tokens let you roll a die for a random bonus, green tokens let you take another turn or return a drawn token to your bag, and blue chips let you move extra or upgrade a token.

If you draw a dream token, place it on one of the clouds on your animal board. After you draw and place a third dream token, use all the rubies on your board to buy new tokens — no two being the same color, mind you — then place these new tokens and all previously drawn tokens in your bag. Keep taking turns until someone reaches the end of the track and wins!

Mit Quacks & Co. nach Quedlinburg includes a double-sided game board for a shorter or longer race; orange and purple tokens that provide new powers, such as advancing as many spaces as the number of rubies you have; and double-sided action boards for each type of colored token, allowing you to play with different sets of actions from game to game.

The bag building joy of Quacks of Quedlinburg was already fairly approachable for families, but here in Dash it is simplified further and the result is a great little racing game for families and gamers. Instead of making potions this time players are feeding their chosen animal various fruit and veg to encourage them to run fast and far. Rather than the simultaneous play of Quacks players will draw one token on their turn and act on it. Dreamweed is the worse as you don’t move but draw three and you get to buy new chips. All other chips have a type and a number. You move forward the same amount as the number and take the action according to type. Just like big Quacks each type of potion has a cardboard key that tells you what the power is, and is double sided so you can play a more advanced version or mix them up as you choose. Dash doesn’t replace Quacks but is a fun take on the formula and one that has created genuine ‘race’ moments. Like when my son was way out in the lead but kept drawing 1’s until another player who’d invested in a lot of 8 chips blasted past him to steal the win! Great stuff!

This is a much simplified game to The Quacks of Quedlinburg (with which it bears many similarities) and obviously aimed at younger gamers, it is an enjoyable race game using the same bag building techniques as defined by its older brother “Q.o.Q”. You start with a bag containing 8 tokens and on a turn take a token from your bag, you move the number of steps on the path as indicated by the token and if it has a power you use that power which may result in a jump up the path or replace a token in your bag or roll a die. There are 4 Dream tokens in your bag which you want to avoid as if you draw your third you miss your turn but can use any rubies you have collected to buy another 1 or 2 (different) token(s). This game has the same level of anguish as you get in “Q.o.Q.” especially as you near the finish and seem to draw nothing but Dream tokens then see someone else take the chequered flag. Overall an enjoyable light game taking about 25 minutes.
