Description

Sanctum, once a great city, is now shrouded in darkness. The lands surrounding the city are home to the demon horde lead by the Lord of Demons. It’s up to a handful of heroes to rise up, battle through the horde, banish the evil that plagues the world, and restore the realm to its former glory.

Sanctum is an epic adventure competitive game for 2-4 players that’s inspired by the hack & slash genre and converted into a modern board game. As one of the heroes, you embark upon a quest to rid the land of a demonic invasion, fighting your way through countless enemies and gearing up to face the Lord of Demons himself. In the process of venturing deeper into the land, ever so much closer to the Demon Lord, the heroes have to improve their equipment and adapt their combat tactics to face the increasing difficulty of combat.

The seemingly simple dice-throwing mechanism turns out to be a tactical delicacy once you realize that equipping the correct gear is a crucial part of surviving in these hostile lands…

This is a really interesting game. Looks very much like a table top version of Diablo, but the design standout is the elegant character progression. You progress through the maps defeating monsters and obtaining your specialist skills by moving tokens upward. You need these tokens to equip loot taken from the dead monsters, and to increase your stamina and magic pools (probably incorrect terminology). These pools are essential to help you defend enemy attacks and to adjust your dice rolls for damage. The interesting conundrum comes from which monsters to attack and which tokens of that colour to prioritise moving. After a series of maps there is a big fight against the arch-Daemon where luck comes heavily into play because you will have likely exhausted your adjustment options. A suitably devilish solo mode is available from the publisher.

This game surprised me! I think in a good way though. The game effectively takes place over two halves. First half is the journey to the sanctum which is the character levelling phase. Character levelling has more of the feel of a puzzle game than a dungeon crawl as you pick put pairs of groups of demons to fight, balancing colours, weapon types and levels to try and optimise your player board before the big fight. I really enjoyed this method of character levelling and found the quite subtle adjustments you can make to try and squeeze the most out of your turns enjoyable. Second half of the game is the boss battle where you are in a fight to the death with what you have, no equipment swapping and no rest. I highly recommend not to play this game on normal difficulty as you may well find the final fight underwhelming if you do. The boss attacks repeatedly over 9 rounds and each player moves their own character marker along as they defeat the stages, the character with the most health left in the winner.

If anyone bought this game expecting a traditional dungeon crawl I can imagine them being disappointed. As a relatively fast playing puzzle game with a bit of randomness and good flavour, I think Sanctum does a good job. It may take a few more plays to properly make my mind up but I have been thinking about the game for two days after playing it, which I tend to view as a good sign!
