Description

Strand Unter (designed by Christian Raczek) is a three-dimensional family game in which everyone places their castles in the sand so that they are close to the water, while trying to stay out of the way of the tide.

Plenty of shells can be found in the ankle-deep sand trenches, and those who collect enough of them in competition with their fellow players can build a total of four sandcastles. These castles differ in size, value, and required building material. In the end, the best castles are those that escape the approaching tide by a hair’s breadth…

This is a nice family game with an interesting bidding mechanism add to this a clever use of the game box together with some blue cloth that imitates the receding tide and some cute sea shells and you have a very pleasurable gaming experience. On a turn the tide recedes one segment on the 3D beach (see photos on BGG) which will reveal a number of coloured shells, the players then all select what they want from that row only on a bidding wheel, these are then revealed and players take their rewards with weaker bids being actioned first followed by stronger bids, if players have the same bid OR they cannot take their full bid because of earlier claims then they wait to the end not taking anything and can claim a consolation shell from what is left. The shells are needed to claim Castles which players can build (max one on a turn) only on the current bidding row. When the tide has run out it starts returning again players bidding for new shells drawn from the bag in the active row this time with the tide moving towards the castles already built possibly removing them from the game if reached by the wave. At the end players score for their castle sizes and how close to the low tide mark they have built them – the braver you are the higher your score unless of course you were too brave. This has the lot, interesting mechanisms, player interaction, a bit of resource management, some very cute bits and engaging game play.
