Description

The Isle of Cats board game (designed by Frank West) is a competitive, medium-weight, card-drafting, polyomino cat-placement board game for 1-4 players (6 with expansions).

You are citizens of Squalls End on a rescue mission to The Isle of Cats and must rescue as many cats as possible before the evil Lord Vesh arrives. Each cat is represented by a unique tile and belongs to a family, you must find a way to make them all fit on your boat while keeping families together.

You will also need to manage resources as you:

  • Explore the island (by drafting cards)
  • Rescue cats
  • Find treasures
  • Befriend Oshax
  • Study ancient lessons

Each lesson you collect will give you another personal way of scoring points, and there are 38 unique lessons available.

Complete lessons, fill your boat and keep cat families together to score points, the winner will be the player with the most points after five rounds.

In my mind this is the best of all the tile tessellation games, each player receives a player board (in the shape of a ship) in the middle of the table is placed an island to which to the right and left are dealt some tiles each tile has a cat on them in one of 5 different colours. The idea of the game is to rescue the cats, the cash of the game is fish and at the start of the round each player is given 20 fish and 7 cards, they then draft the cards ending up with a hand of 7, you must pay fish for the cards you want to keep. The cards may be goal cards for the game, treasure cards (small tiles to fill gaps on your ship), special cards giving 1-off actions, or boots and baskets. The next stage is in turn players spend fish and baskets to capture cats from the island and place them safely on their ship with normal tile tessellation rules with each tile other than the first touching at least one other tile. There are 5 rounds like this with the aim of scoring the most points, these come from goal cards and creating families of cats (touching tiles of the same colour) the bigger the family the larger the points reward. Players then lose points for uncovered spaces with rats on them on their ship and for rooms within their boat not completely covered. Overall a colourful and fun game, the deck has enough variety to make every game different and the decision making around taking cat tiles gives you plenty to think about trying to match tiles and cat colours whilst also adhering to your goal cards all the time with a limited amount of fish. Highly recommended and a mid-weight game I have rated 8.5 on BGG.
