The game is a blast, probably the best 4x I've ever played. Games tend to be very long though, easily 9 to 10 hours when you're learning, so it's better to plan them across several days.
Compared to the previous version of the game, I'd say the basic (without expansions) 4th edition is more beginner friendly than the previous one but if all players play safe and no one dares going on the offensive, the game can tend to be dragged on for very very long.
