In Arkwright players manage up to four factories in 18th Century England, aiming to create the most valuable block of shares by increasing share value and purchasing from the bank.
Factories require workers, who automatically generate demand. Players can replace costly workers (wage 2-5) with machines (1). Factory output increases through hiring or technical improvements.
During action rounds, players set goods prices. Success in sales depends on factory levels, quality, and promotion efforts—higher factors increase success chances, while higher prices reduce them.
Players use personal "action tokens" for activities like building factories, hiring workers, and improving quality. On their turn, they place tokens on the "Administration board", paying costs from 2 to 10. Higher payments enable more actions. Throughout the game, actions become more effective with new tokens, allowing multiple improvements in one turn.
After each action round, active factories require payment for workers and machines before selling products. Share values increase based on sales and quality.
Goods can be traded colonially with East Indian Company contracts.
The game spans 5 rounds, with four turns each. Players clear action tokens and reveal events between rounds. Victory goes to the player with the most valuable share block—neither share quantity nor value alone ensures success.
Arkwright offers various strategies: maximising all factories, focusing on two, colonial shipping, or domestic markets. Players must adapt to opponents' strategies, entering profitable markets or withdrawing from competitive ones, and timing share purchases effectively.
Begin with the 120-minute "Spinning Jenny" version, or choose "Waterframe" for a fuller 240-minute strategic experience.
